Atlanta PD Shooting Recap: June 13th, 2020

ATLANTA - After another week of protests against police brutality, violence continues to escalate between police officials and the black community. On Friday night, Atlanta Police Department officers responded to a dispatch call regarding a sleeping man parked in a Wendy's drive-thru. When police arrived on the scene, they found Rayshard Brooks, a 27-year-old African American male, asleep.

While taking Mr. Brooks into custody, the arresting officers allege he resisted arrest, stole a taser from one of the officers, and took off running in the opposite direction. During the chase, officers at the scene reported Mr. Brooks turned and aimed the taser in their direction. The officers responded by shooting Mr. Brooks. Brooks was later taken to a hospital, where he died.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has launched an investigation into the incident and released the video surveillance from that night. In addition, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has announced the resignation of Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields. This is the second time Chief Shields has come under fire in recent weeks. This event follows an incident resulting in six Atlanta police officers facing charges for excessive use of force during a protest in Fulton County.

More info to come.
