(Atlanta, Georgia) - Atlanta Police Department Chief Erika Shields resigned today in the wake of an officer involved shooting. 27-year-old Rayshard Brooks was gunned down in the parking lot of an Atlanta restaurant after a struggle with Atlanta Police Department officers.
Earlier today, the State of Georgia NAACP President, Reverend James Woodall demanded her resignation in a virtual press conference. Reverend Woodall demanded more than just her resignation in that press conference.
During the press conference, Reverend Woodall said they've heard reports of the officers cutting off their body cameras. In addition to Chief Shields' resignation, Reverend Woodall demanded that the officers' body camera footage be released to the public. If the footage is unavailable, due to the officers disabling their body cameras, Reverend Woodall demand they be fired.
"We are done dying and we will do everything in our power to hold our elected officials accountable for their actions and their silence," said Reverend Woodall.
