Apply for free this week at 20 Alabama colleges

For the second consecutive year, colleges and universities across the state of Alabama will be waiving application fees in an effort to increase enrollment and educational engagement. The Free Alabama College Application week runs from February 22-26 and is open to all applicants seeking to enroll in one of the state's participating post-secondary institutions.

High schools statewide are participating in the initiative and encouraging students to take advantage of the cash-saving opportunity. During the first week of February, educators from all corners of the state attended an Alabama State Department of Education-sponsored professional development workshop where they were briefed on the details of the application week and the participating schools. According to a press release from the ALSDE, "the key goal of Alabama College Application Week is to inspire students and inform parents about the true benefits of attending college and earning post-secondary degrees."

Last year, the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama (PARCA) released a report showing a 92 percent graduation rate for the state's high school seniors during the 2018-2019 school year. State-sponsored programs including Alabama Goes to College and the Alabama College Attainment Network have helped improve college readiness for students as well as Alabama's educational outcomes. In 2011, the state's high school graduation rate was 72 percent. At that time, Alabama's high school graduation rate was one of the lowest in the country. Today, the state ranks seventh nationally.
